AMS Titanium Specifications: What They Are and When You Actually Need Them

Buyers sometimes specify AMS on an RFQ because it sounds like the “safer, more premium” choice — without realizing it’s a meaningfully different, and more expensive, requirement than ASTM. Here’s what AMS actually is, and how to tell whether you need it.

What AMS is

AMS (Aerospace Material Specification) is published by SAE International — the same organization historically known for automotive standards, now covering aerospace as well. AMS specifications are written specifically for aircraft and aerospace-adjacent applications, where material failure has much higher consequences than in general industrial use.

Why AMS is stricter than ASTM

For the same nominal grade (say, Gr5 / Ti-6Al-4V), an AMS specification typically requires:

  • Tighter composition control — narrower allowable ranges for trace elements than the equivalent ASTM standard
  • More rigorous testing and documentation — additional mechanical testing, more detailed material certification, and stricter traceability back to the original melt
  • Process controls at the mill that ASTM doesn’t mandate

The key spec to know: AMS 4928 — covers Ti-6Al-4V (Gr5) bar and billet for aerospace use, and is the AMS equivalent of ASTM B348.

AMS and ASTM are not interchangeable

This is the single most important thing to understand: a supplier quoting “ASTM B348 compliant” material is not automatically offering something that also satisfies AMS 4928, even though both cover Gr5 bar. If your end application requires AMS-certified material — most commonly because it’s going into an aircraft component or a customer contractually requires it — ASTM-only material will not pass incoming inspection, regardless of how similar the numbers look on paper.

Do you actually need AMS?

Not every “high-performance” application needs it. As a rough guide:

  • You likely need AMS if the part is going into an aircraft, is supplied into an aerospace prime contractor’s supply chain, or your customer’s purchase order explicitly requires it
  • You likely don’t need AMS for general industrial machining, automotive (non-aerospace), medical devices (which typically use ASTM F136 for Gr23, not AMS), sporting goods, or most commercial equipment

Specifying AMS when it isn’t actually required adds cost and lead time for no benefit — the additional testing and documentation aren’t free, and few suppliers hold AMS-qualified stock the way they hold standard ASTM material.

How to state this correctly in an RFQ

Be explicit: “Gr5 bar per AMS 4928” if you need aerospace-grade material, or “Gr5 bar per ASTM B348” if you don’t.
